Vehicles must excel in front, side, rollover, and rear crash tests.Their crashworthiness is based on results of a 40 mph frontal offset crash test where the sides of the vehicle are impacted by a 31 mph moving barrier. Strength-to-weight ratio testing is used to provide a roof strength test, where the roof must withstand four times the car’s weight before reaching five-inches of crush. Rear crash protection is based on the results of a simulated collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck from behind at 20 mph.
